Looking for volunteers to assist in flora and fauna research at a farm in the Kalahari Kweneng District, or assist in the maintenance of an indigenous garden in Matebeleng, Botswana.
The garden is located 25km from Gaborone, on the edge of a village, 100m from the Notwane river. It was set up 5 years ago, and so many species still need to be logged and identified.
 It has large granite boulders, savannah grasses (melinis spp, eragrostis spp, aristida spp, panicum spp), a variety of wildflowers (including nerines, and xerophyta retinervis) and indigenous trees (grewia spp, combretum spp, bridelia spp, pavetta spp, vitex zeyheri ) that supports a diverse habitat of: birds (including bats and owls), reptiles(house snake, monitor lizard, yellow-throated plated lizard, rock agama), amphibians (guttural toad, red banded rubber frog and foam nest tree frog) and insects(as well as larger fauna such as mongoose, hedgehog, and tortoise).
Duties will include logging and identification of species, rainfall and weather; taking care of the permaculture garden in which organic vegetables, herbs and fruits are grown and logging of species grown and harvested; maintenance of the aloe, bog and succulent gardens; bee maintenance of two hives; pond maintenance of koi, catfish, comets & bream; vermiculture worms maintenance; resident cats care; chicken coop care; goat kraal care; and tortoise enclosure (presently in the permaculture garden) and visitor education regarding these various eco projects
Skills required: A basic interest in the environment, some scientific background would be advantageous, gardening knowledge, and love of all wildlife including insects!
Aim: Is to conserve a small habitat in a fast changing and developing area. Educational tours regarding the environment, showcase the various methods in which to help protect the environment,  to create a wildlife garden that helps to preserve the myriad of creatures that visit it,  and highlight the frequently overlooked individual roles of various species that help to maintain the fragile balance of the world we live in.
